Facts about Koalas
- Koalas aren't actually bears... they're actually marisupials
- They're fussy eaters
- They have a supportive butt... interesting
- ‘Koala’ is thought to mean ‘no drink’ in the Australian Aboriginal language
- Koalas can sleep up to 18 hours a day
- Their life span is between 13-18 years
- Cuddly critters, koalas measure about 60cm to 85cm long, and weigh about 14kg.
- Koalas are found in the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. They have grey fur with a cream-coloured chest, and strong, clawed feet, perfect for living in the branches of trees!
- Koalas in the southern parts of Australia (left) are considerably larger and have thicker fur than those in the north (right).This is thought to be an adaptation to keep them warm in the colder southern winters.
